Culturally Sensitive Psychotherapy
An approach that honors diverse cultural identities, values, and lived experiences
Culturally sensitive psychotherapy is an approach that honors the diverse cultural identities, values, and lived experiences that shape each person's mental health journey. It recognizes that culture-including race, ethnicity, language, religion, gender, sexuality, family systems, and historical or intergenerational experiences - profoundly influences how individuals understand themselves, their relationships, and their struggles.
In an integrative therapeutic framework, culturally sensitive practice means drawing from a range of therapeutic modalities while staying attuned to the client's cultural context. This involves ongoing self-reflection by the therapist, openness to cultural differences, and a commitment to addressing issues such as marginalization, systemic oppression, and identity-related stressors when they arise.
The goal is to create a respectful, inclusive, and affirming therapeutic space where clients feel seen, heard, and understood-not in spite of their cultural identity, but in full recognition of it.
